medical conditions
The following are medical conditions
for which poor mattresses can make the problem worse:
-
tension headache
-
arthritis
-
frozen shoulder
-
lumbar pain
-
sacro-iliac dysfunction
-
arthritic hip / bursitis
-
restless legs
-
hiatus hernia
Tension headache
The large trapezius muscles that support the skull all day, can only relax when the individual is at rest. Anything that triggers a ‘guarding action’ of these
muscles can cause head pain upon wakening.
Arthritis
The neck needs to be completely supported and at rest during sleep. If the mattress doesn’t accommodate the shoulder, then the shoulder-blade can be forced into the neck, often irritating sensitive nerve sheaths. Any inflammation of the area will be exacerbated without correct support of the neck and skull.
Frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes restriction of motion in the shoulder joint. The cause of a frozen shoulder is not well understood, but it often occurs for no known reason. Frozen shoulder causes the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint to contract and form scar tissue. A mattress that allows for the shoulder blade to
be accommodated can assist in stabilising the condition.
Lumbar Pain
This is one of the most common ‘symptoms’ of a non-supportive mattress. When sleeping on the back, the lower muscles will attempt to support the lower spine,
and this can result in severe muscle spasm after several hours in this position. Some ‘memory foam’ materials can provide the required pressure relief, but often, due to the low density of the foam, the support level is poor.
Sacro-iliac dysfunction
Often associated with rotation of the pelvis, causing weight compensation over one leg. The health care practitioner can free the ‘locked’ joint, and the ideal mattress will help to maintain the correct pelvic alignment during sleep, thus stabilising the condition for the sleep period.
Arthritic hip or bursitis
Hard, unyielding mattresses can cause severe sleep disturbance, particularly when sore and painful hips are not accommodated into the mattress. Bursitis usually results from a repetitive movement, or prolonged and excessive pressure. ‘Hip-replacement’ patients will find the Therapura surface of extreme comfort, whilst muscles and tissue go through the healing process
Restless Legs
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition in which your legs feel extremely uncomfortable while you're sitting or lying down. It usually makes you feel like getting up and moving around. When you do so, the unpleasant feeling of restless legs syndrome goes away. It can be associated with an iron deficiency, in addition to excessive pressure to the surrounding muscles in the pelvic/hip area.
Hiatus Hernia
This is a leakage of acid juices (reflux) into the oesophagus, causing pain. The disorder occurs when when part of the stomach protrudes through the opening in the diaphragm.
Many individuals find the need to sleep ‘propped up’, and this often results in stiffness and pain in the lower back on waking.
By using a Therapura mattress or overlay, the sleeper can overcome a lot of the muscle spasm associated with being ‘propped up’, whilst achieving increased comfort and muscular recovery.
